TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database and User Guide now available
Following on the publication of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Report in December 2025, the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center and IEA announce the release of the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal International Database and User Guide.
The International Database enables researchers, policymakers, and others to analyze data from nine TIMSS 2023 countries who also participated in the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal study. These countries assessed the mathematics and science achievement of a cohort of fourth- and eighth-grade students in 2023 and again in 2024, capturing changes in achievement over one year.
In addition to achievement data, the database contains:
- Contextual data related to students’ experiences at home and in school, collected from students and their parents, teachers, and school administrators
- System-level information, such as educational policies and curriculum structures, provided by participating countries’ National Research Coordinators
- Process data captured by the computer-based assessment system, including students’ navigation behaviors and other screen-level interactions
The public-use version of the International Database, along with a detailed user guide, is available from the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at https://timss2023.org
About TIMSS and TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal
IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) is a digital assessment of fourth- and eighth-grade students’ mathematics and science achievement conducted every four years since 1995. For over three decades, TIMSS has been at the forefront of monitoring global trends in student achievement.
By following the same cohort of students across consecutive school years, the TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal study collected data to enable analyses of learning growth, changes in educational experiences, and differences in achievement trajectories across countries and student subgroups.
